Stories In Hand - November 2008
Welcome! Course Introduction
Welcome to Stories in Hand!
I am so excited to go on this journey with you! I have been thinking a lot in the past few months about stories. As I've looked through my scrapbook albums, I have realized that while I've told many of the stories I've wanted, there are SO MANY MORE stories in my head and my heart that need telling.
I decided to create a system for capturing the stories I would like to tell, so that when I sit down to storytell (whether that's scrapbooking, taking photos, blogging, or any other of the various ways I can record the stories of my life), I can have some stories in hand.
This class is really not about writing, or about scrapbooking, but about the gathering process. About the remembering process. About collecting the experiences, big and small, that have shaped us and made us who we are. The stories worth telling.
I anticipate that this will be a life-changing experience for all of us, and I am so excited that you've made the decision to join me on this journey!
Let's talk about what we'll need before class begins on November 9.
Supplies You'll Need
We'll be collecting our stories into a system that includes a binder AND a carry-along notepad, both of which we'll be making in class. Here are the supplies you will need:
A 6x6 "naked" binder. I will be providing a cool cover, or you can cover your own with patterned paper, etc. Perfect binders for this include:
American Crafts: (Green, Navy, Black, Red, or Brown)
7Gypsies: Green, Red, or Black
You can also make your own album using chipboard (I love the inexpensive sheets of double-thick chipboard from Dick Blick) and binding rings, which you can find at your office supply store. You'll also need an awl, or a Crop-a-Dile to punch holes in your chipboard cover. A great, creative, and super inexpensive alternative to a binder.
Plenty of white or light-colored letter-sized, 65 lb cardstock. You can get a variety of finishes of 250-sheet packs of white cardstock here from the Paper Mill Store, or if you want to get fancy, you can get light-colored cardstock as well, like light brown, light blue, and so forth, which will look awesome when we print on it. You can split a 500-sheet ream with a friend for extra savings! :D. 65 lb is a medium-weight cardstock that is great for the project we'll be making. You are more than welcome to use Bazzill textured cardstock as well, which is 80 lb. But it's more expensive than the smooth stuff, and you have to feel ok about writing on textured cardstock. ;) NOTE: If you are international, please feel free to pick up A4 size.
Two 2-inch or 3-inch binding rings. You can get these from your local office supply store.
Adhesive for the front cover.
Tools You'll Need
An inkjet printer. We'll be printing out a bunch of worksheet-type pages, as well as checklists and a prompt list, and a few extra goodies. ;)
A hole punch. This is going to get a workout.
A paper trimmer.
Scissors.
A really good pen. My friend Aubrey introduced me to the Martha Stewart writing pens availble
1.5-inch circle punch (optional)
Corner rounder punch (optional)
We'll be creating our project during the first days of class, and then spend the rest of our class time together gathering and sharing stories. I am SO excited!
What to Expect Next
On November 9, look for an email from me to introduce you to the additional features of our class, including our private message board. You're all set up for class, so now all you need to do is gather your supplies, gather up a few friends to take the class with, sit back, and look forward to November 9! I can't wait!
Surprise! One Week Extension!
And just as a secret reward for making it this far, I've got a surprise! I've decided to extend the duration of our class by a week, so we'll have TWO full weeks together! Class now runs from November 9-23! YAY! It'll give us lots of opportunity to gather, record, and share our stories!
That's all for the course introduction! We are just a little while away from the experience of a lifetime. See you soon! :D
Welcome.
